Time to update the Civics textbooks?

Appearance on CNN's State of the Union

"...we have three branches of government. We have a House. We have a Senate. We have a President."

Thank goodness for Sen. Charles Schumer. For years now, I have apparently been operating under the mistaken impression that our three branches of government in the U.S. were the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

Fortunately for me and a host of other misguided Americans, Sen. Schumer set us straight in his recent appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.  Imagine my surprise, when he told us, “…we have three branches of government. We have a House. We have a Senate. We have a President.”

Okay. All joking aside, the senator really needs a quick and simple civics lesson on what the delegates at the Constitutional Convention had in mind for the branches. Civics lessons should be required for senators.

Well, just in case the reference for the quick and simple civics lesson at CongressForKids.net above didn’t help the senator, Michelle Malkin has offered him a flow chart on the breakdown in the branches of government. So, Chuck may be a visual learner, instead of auditory. Obviously, he isn’t a tactile learner, since he’s already been in government so long and doesn’t get it yet.

Of course, it might not hurt to get him a copy of the U.S. Constitution for Dummies the U.S. Constitution for Dummies Cheat Sheet too. Obviously, he’s struggling to catch up now. He’ll need all the help he can get.

UPDATE: Don’t take civics lessons from elected officials, especially Chuck Schumer. Elected officials know less about the Constitution than the public. Public officials scored five points lower than the general public.

UPDATE: Okay. IMAO reminds us to give credit where credit is due. Chuck did identify that there are 3 branches, even if he didn’t get them quite right.
